Women in R&D: Pvt sector beats PSUs

Research and development space in the private segment holds more women employees compared to the government support agencies. Even if the men dominate this segment, this is truly good to see women joining the R & D department.  According to a report, at least 7 out of 10 women employees are involved in research.

According to the latest Science and Technology Indicators (STI-2019-20), if we compare it with government R & D labs, not even half of the women employees who are in the research and development agencies have the same role when it comes to Government R&D agencies.

If we look at public units, the industrial sector can be compared well with the private R&D facilities. While, if we look at the overall number of the women on the rolls across such units, it is almost 10 times lesser  than the private R&D facilities.

Chairman of Aarin Capital Partners, TV Mohandas Pai said, “The reason for a higher percentage of women in the private sector being in R&D is because of the massive increase, which government research units are yet to do. “This has been the case for a while now. Although there is a slight increase in women in academia with the number of assistant professors having increased, the divide between academic and research institutions means that not enough women are in R&D,” said Rohini Gabole, a senior physicist who has chaired a panel on women in S&T.

“I’m glad we are discussing investment. FOr some reason people in the country think the private sector does not invest in research, which is not correct. As companies make more money, they become bigger and compete more. At this stage, they invest more in R&D as they need product information. This is happening in a big way in pharma and IT now, and we will see this increase,” he added.
