Hyundai Collaborates With Uber To Develop Rechargeable Electric Air TaxisUber and Hyundai Motor Company teams up to develop Electric Air Taxies which can be charged in 5-7 minutes. The announcement was made official at the Consumer Electronic show 2020 (CES 2020) at Las Vegas, USA. This Electric Air Taxies will be capable of carrying four passengers including the pilot at a time and will be able to cover a distance of 290 km per hour at the maximum altitude of 1000-2000 feet above ground level. Hyundai will be involved into development and deployment of the air vehicle whereas airspace support service, connections to ground transportation, and customer interfaces through an aerial ride share network will be taken care of by Uber.

The vehicle will be 100 percent electric, will utilize electric propulsion and will only require five to seven minutes of recharge during peak hours. For increasing safety by decreasing any single point of failure Hyundai electric aircraft will utilize distributed electric propulsion, powering multiple rotors and propellers around the airframe.

Our vision of Urban Air Mobility will transform the concept of urban transportation,” said Jaiwon Shin, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai’s Urban Air Mobility (UAM) Division. “We expect UAM to vitalize urban communities and provide more quality time to people. We are confident that Uber Elevate is the right partner to make this innovative product readily available to as many customers as possible.”

Before announcing their partnership officially Hyundai worked with Uber Elevate and developed PAV (Personal Air Vehicle) model, S-A1, optimizes electrical vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL). NASA initiated putting design concept out publicly to inspire innovation amongst multiple companies.

“Hyundai is our first vehicle partner with experience of manufacturing passenger cars on a global scale. We believe Hyundai has the potential to build Uber Air vehicles at rates unseen in the current aerospace industry, producing high quality, reliable aircraft at high volumes to drive down passenger costs per trip. Combining Hyundai’s manufacturing muscle with Uber’s technology platform represents a giant leap forward for launching a vibrant air taxi network in the coming years,” said Eric Allison, head of Uber Elevate.
